Super Sunday birthday party

Senior activities
Marjorie VanKooten was surprised with a birthday cake during the Super Bowl Sunday party at Helen Gwin Common Room at Eagles View senior housing. While the men remained glued to the game, the women stopped to sing “Happy Birthday” and encourage Marge on blowing out the candles. Marge is Cooper Landing Senior Citizens Corp. Inc. president and gave an update at the recent community club meeting.
Ravens View, the new section of six apartments, is on target for completion April 1. These units are up the hill past Eagles View and also have a tremendous view of Kenai Lake and mountains. It is visible from the highway across the lake near Milepost 46.
Jonathan Osowiecki is the maintenance department at Eagles View, Vicki Berry leads a weight training class in Helen Gwin Common Room every Tues. and Friday morning, and Cindy Romig is the newly hired administrative assistant. Friday nights are game night with everything from pinochle to Mexican Train to Tripoly being played.
CLSCCI’s fund raising soup supper Jan. 31 brought a good crowd to the community hall and a wide selection of soups and pies for dessert.

Community club report
Community Club officers for the next two years elected Jan. 29 are President Gary Galbraith, Vice president Sandra Key and Secretary-treasurer Phil Weber.
Gary Galbraith, Angel Bond, and Shannon Meredith are new Chamber of Commerce board members. Cheryle James reported the chamber is looking at developing a summer Saturday market.
Yvette Galbraith spoke for the local Parent Advisory Committee. There were some enchiladas available from their fund raising sale and the St. Patrick’s Day dinner is scheduled for March 10 at Sunrise Inn. Mary Louise Molenda was given much credit for helping the school with the enchiladas and the St. Pat’s dinner. Thanks to help from Sandra Key and Barney’s Ski Chalet in Anchorage, Cooper Landing school has new cross-country skis. Chess players are invited to test their skills after school on Tuesday and Thursdays. Battle of the Books is scheduled for Feb. 9 and 11. Dan Michels said the Tuesday night volleyball sessions were pretty good, too.
Cooper Landing Emergency Services President Scott Davis said the Alaska State Troopers have leased the old ambulance hall and moved in. Eight people are currently in EMT 1 training.
The Community School program is doing very well with an average of 90 people per week attending sessions including the “boot camp” fitness class taught by Heidi Cox. Deb Carlson is teaching a seed starting/garden journal making class in March. A new class schedule will be mailed soon. Deb is also chairing a meeting Feb. 13 at the community hall regarding proactively making Cooper Landing a walkable community.
Cooper Landing Gun Club President Laura Johnson described club projects completed and planned. The community club voted to donate $2,400 to help with dirt work on berms, painting the classroom, completing the new pistol range and more. CLCC receives $4,800 per year for the cell phone tower located on the property used by the gun club.
Scott Walden from the Kenai Peninsula Borough Office of Emergency Management spoke to the group regarding every aspect of volcanic ash awareness and mitigation with the eruption of Mt. Redoubt seemingly imminent. Protective masks for seniors are available at Eagles View.
Cooper Landing Health Center, Inc. is moving forward with funding for a feasibility study to look into medical needs in Cooper Landing, Moose Pass, and Hope. Affordable health care for anyone who needs it is what the board of directors is working toward and they ask everyone’s assistance in answering questions and offering suggestions for the health center.
