Trooper Report

The Alaska State Troopers reported the following incidents. Any charges reported are merely accusations and the defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.

DUI
HOPE—On Nov. 20 at about 1:50 p.m., a Trooper stopped a vehicle at mile 56 of the Seward for erratic driving. The driver Crystal Jackson, 43, of Seward, was subsequently arrested for DUI and DWLR. Jackson was transported to the Seward Jail and remanded without incident. Bail was set at $1,000.

False Statement
GIRDWOOD—On Nov. 23, Soren Johansson, 57, of Girdwood was cited by the Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Girdwood Post for making a false statement on his 2007 resident sport fish license. Bail is set at $310 in Anchorage District Court.

False Statement
GIRDWOOD—On Nov. 25, Ashley Ager, 23 years of age of Girdwood was cited by the Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Girdwood Post for making a false statement on her 2008 resident sport fish license. Bail is set at $310 in Seward District Court.

Driving With A Suspended License
COOPER LANDING—On Nov. 26 at approximately 2:30 p.m., Troopers stopped a yellow 1983 Chevrolet pickup near mile 37 of the Sterling Highway. The driver was identified as Gerald Terp, age 53 of Soldotna, by his AKID. A records check revealed Terp’s operator’s license was suspended effective Nov. 14 with no ending date for failure to pay child support. Terp was placed under arrest, transported to the Seward City Jail, and remanded. Bail was set at $500. The vehicle was released to a valid third party.

Search and Rescue
TURNAGAIN PASS—On Turnagain Pass On Nov. 29, at approximately 2 p.m., The State Trooper Dispatch Center in Soldotna received a report of an injuries snow machine rider in the Turnagain Pass area. Two Troopers from Girdwood responded to the area with snow machines as well as Cooper Landing and Girdwood EMS. Approximately three miles into the backcountry Troopers,
EMS, and good Samaritans contacted Richard Kovich, age 25 of Anchorage. An investigation revealed Kovich had suffered a broken left femur and a compound fracture of the lower left leg in a snow machine crash. He was transported to an ambulance waiting at the Seward Highway and was then transported to Alaska Regional Hospital in Anchorage for treatment of his injuries. Because of the poor weather a helicopter rescue was impossible. It was due to the assistance of good Samaritans and Girdwood EMS that the rescue had a successful outcome in as little time as possible.

Burglary/Theft
COOPER LANDING—On Nov. 29, at approximately 2:00 a.m., Joel Milette, age 25 of Kenai, and Joshwa Milette, age 27 of Kenai, reported to the Alaska State Troopers several items were stolen out of their motorhome, which they were living in, on a construction site near 4-mile Snug Harbor Road. An investigation revealed unknown person(s) entered the motorhome and took a shotgun and several other items valued at approximately $200. The investigation is continuing. Stolen Vehicle Recovered
GIRDWOOD—On Nov. 30, at 2:45 a.m., Julia P. Dykstra, age 34 of Girdwood, reported that at about 0240 hours, an unknown person(s) stole her late model mini van while it was parked at the Sitzmark Bar and Grill in Girdwood. The vehicle was unlocked, unattended, and the keys were in the ignition with
the vehicle running. Dykstra was in the process of loading the mini van with equipment. The mini van was recovered in the parking lot of the Hotel Alyeska at about 5:00 a.m. The investigation is continuing.

False Statement
GIRDWOOD—On Nov. 30, Naomi Davenport, 27, of Palmer was cited by the Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Girdwood Post for making a false statement on her 2008 resident sport fish license. Bail is set at $310 in Anchorage District Court.

Marijuana/Methamphetamine Possession
GIRDWOOD—On Nov. 30, at 9:30 p.m., a Trooper contacted a 2000 Dodge Caravan in a pull-out near mile 75 Seward Highway for a welfare check. An investigation revealed the driver, Cimmanon Tangman, age 34 of Anchor Point, possessed approximately 13.5 grams of marijuana. One of his passengers, Evdoksia N. Lasiter, age 31 of Anchor Point, possessed approximately 1 gram of Crystal Methamphetamine. Lasiter was arrested for Misconduct Involving a Controlled Substance 4th degree and later remanded to the Anchorage jail with a $2,500. Charges of Misconduct Involving a Controlled Substance 6th degree will be forwarded to the District Attorney’s Office regarding Tangman.

False Statement
GIRDWOOD—On Dec. 1, Annamarie Russell, 44, of Eagle River was cited by the Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Girdwood Post for making a false statement on her 2008 resident sport fish license. Bail is set at $310 in Anchorage District Court.

False Statement
GIRDWOOD—On Dec. 2, Jason Angelow, 32, of Girdwood was cited by the Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Girdwood Post for making a false statement on his 2007 resident sport fish license. Bail is set at $310 in Anchorage District Court.

Motor Vehicle Collision
GIRDWOOD—On Dec. 3, at approximately 6:30 p.m., a Trooper responded to a motor vehicle collision near mile 74 of the Seward Highway. An investigation determined that a 2005 Mazda SUV driven by Alvin J. Potter Jr., age 56 of St. Marys, was traveling northbound passing another vehicle when he lost control and went into the ditch. Both the driver and his passenger reported wearing their seatbelts. The passenger reported non-life threatening injuries and was checked by paramedics but refused to be transported. The vehicle sustained approximately $6,000 in damages.

DUI
GIRDWOOD—On Dec. 4, at approximately 5:30 p.m. Troopers contacted a black Subaru forester at the intersection of the Alyeska Highway and Danish road in Girdwood regarding a Reckless Driving complaint. The operator of the vehicle was identified as Daniel S. Fowlds, age 24 of Girdwood. Fowlds was found to be operating the vehicle while intoxicated. He was arrested for DUI and Reckless Driving. Fowlds was transported and remanded to the Anchorage Jail with bail set at $5,000 cash and a court approved third party custodian.

Driving With A Suspended License
GIRDWOOD—On Dec. 5, at approximately 9:00 a.m., a Trooper stopped a white Ford pickup near mile 80 of the Seward Highway for speeding. An investigation revealed the driver of the pickup, Kenneth Comfort II, had been operating it with a suspended driver’s license. Comfort II was issued a summons to appear in court on the charge of Driving With a Suspended Operators License and cited for speeding. He was then released at from the scene.

Motor Vehicle Collision/Fatality
GIRDWOOD—On Dec. 12, at 3:22 p.m., the Alaska State Trooper Dispatch Center in Soldotna received the report of a motor vehicle collision near mile 91 of the Seward Highway.
Troopers from Girdwood responded to the scene along with Fire and EMS resources from Girdwood. An initial investigation has revealed that Penny L. Andrews, age 60 of Kenai, was traveling north on the Seward Highway near mile 91 in a 2001 Dodge truck, when her vehicle collided head on with a 2002 Toyota sedan driven by Heather M. Berg, age 39 of Girdwood. Andrews’s vehicle then collided with a 2003 Chevrolet truck driven by Elke M. Saunders, age 37 of Anchorage who was traveling south. Saunders’s vehicle then collided with a 2008 Dodge truck driven by Forrest B. Wicke, age 26 of Anchorage who was traveling north behind Andrews’s vehicle. Wicke’s truck was pulling a trailer with two snowmachines on it.
During the collision both snowmachines came off and one of the snowmachines hit a 2009 Toyota sedan driven by Jennifer A. Elhard, age 28 of Seward traveling south behind Saunders’s vehicle. All vehicles involved sustained extensive damage except Elhard’s vehicle which was driven away from the scene. Berg was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Both Andrews and Saunders were transported by paramedics to an Anchorage area hospital for non-life threatening injuries. An investigation is ongoing.
