A hand full of the best up-and-coming Girdwood and Anchorage alpine skiers proved their mettle under mostly clear skies and cold temps at last weekend’s International Ski Federation’s (ISF) Alpine Ski Race at Alyeska.
“The conditions on Friday, especially, were absolutely beautiful,” Glacier Valley Ski Education Foundation Race Chairman, Russell Sell, said of Friday night’s slalom run under the lights. “We had a big bonfire and the stars were out, it was just really nice out. Saturday was cold, about six degrees, and we didn’t dress the hill but it held up well and was really fast.”
The entry level (ENL) series hosted by Alyeska Ski Club was run in a tech format consisting of a three-day event with a classic night slalom under the lights on Friday, a day slalom on Saturday and a day giant slalom on Sunday for both men and women.
“We’ve got some really impressive junior racers competing with collegiate racers from all around,” said Sell, pointing out John Love, Laura Crews, Katrina Stewart and Noah Sell as a few from Girdwood to keep an eye on this season.
Other Alaskan participants included skiers from as far South as Juneau and as far North as Fairbanks, with a fair sprinkling of international racers thrown into the mix.
FIS events offer an important opportunity for skiers, especially the UAA Sea Wolves and other collegiate racers, to improve their international rankings.
“There was a lot of excitement in the air,” said Sell. “Having a big race around all these younger kids in training was nice because they got to see the big guy’s runs.” |
