Greetings Turnagain Times Readers. The publisher has asked me to write an restaurant and entertainment column for things to do when heading out of the Turnagain Arm. I jumped at the chance. There couldn’t be a better time to share the cultural happenings available to us as a community.
This column is an encouragement and a challenge to get out, find something good and do it. Even if it’s snowing, and there’s something better on TV, take that leap and find a way to partake in the offerings that are before you.
I plan to review and preview events and places giving readers tips on where to go, what to do, and when you can explore arts and leisure in the Anchorage bowl.
So, let’s begin.
For those of you who enjoy live theater, ‘The Boyfriend’ is at Cyrano’s Theatre Company through Dec. 23. This delightful, Flapper-Era musical has something for everyone and Cyrano’s has a history of producing world-class theater. Cyrano’s Theatre Company’s 2009 Season is dedicated to celebrating the history of Alaska. Cyrano’s will feature five World Premiers utilizing the artistic gifts of Alaskan Playwrights.
Theatre is about story telling that touches the heart, stimulates the mind, and has compelling and complex characters. The hope is that these plays will be a powerful theatrical experience and not just a history lesson. The five World Premiers will be: Make Good the Fire by Arlitia Jones, Time Immemorial by Jack Dalton, Alison Warden, The Big One: A Chronicle of the Valdez Oil Spill by Dick Reichman, The Courtship of Zack and Ada by Shane Mitchell, and The Adakian by Peter Porco.
The Boyfriend: Dec. 5-December 23. Extra Holiday Performances at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 22 and the closing show on Tuesday Dec. 23. 413 D St. Anchorage, Email: cyrano@ak.net Tickets: CenterTix.net (907) 274-2599.
Take the children somewhere special! The Anchorage Museum is free on the second Sunday of every month through February. A must see for all Alaskans is the Giinaquq (Like A Face): Sugpiaq Masks of the Kodiak Archipelago. This incredible exhibit continues through Jan. 4, 2009.
The museum has put together a Wonderland of Toys. Volunteer elves have transformed the museum’s atrium into a dazzling tableau of toys and light. Some of the toys date back as far as the 1800s. The Wonderland of Toys runs through Jan.4, 2009.
This New Year’s Eve, Join the Alaska Design Forum, Anchorage Museum and International Gallery of Contemporary Art for a party full of food, music and dancing with northern flair.
The evening’s tone is set by the FREEZE Project, an outdoor art installation on Delaney Park Strip inspired by snow, ice and light. 8 p.m. to midnight.
Tickets cost $100. RSVP by e-mailing info@freezeproject.org or calling 279-1116. For more information, visit the website. A part of the Community Programs series. The Anchorage Museum is located at 121 W. 7th Ave. The corner of 7th Avenue and C Street.
The Fourth Street Market also runs through Dec. 20. You can catch a puppet show, check out the arts and crafts, and have a bite to eat. Or, go to Snow City for breakfast, walk to the Coast Trail viewing deck, enjoy the view, wax poetic about Sleeping Lady, or pose beneath the statue of Captain Cook.
