Letters to the Turnagain Times

Article on Charter School reported quote out of context

I would like to take this opportunity to clarify an inaccuracy in the Charter School article from the Oct. 18 edition of the Turnagain Times. I was misquoted as saying, “Alaska is ranked 46th in the country for education, that’s what happens when most of money goes to administration.”
This insinuation was inaccurate, and potentially detrimental to the efforts of the charter school task force.
While I did reference a statistic of Alaska being ranked 46th in the country for education, in no way do I feel that it is a result of the percentage of the total district budget being spent on administration. Additionally, I feel the misquote was out of context with the topic of discussion: exploring the idea of a charter school in Girdwood.
My passion lies in working with others in the community to provide the young people of Girdwood the best opportunities to succeed; that lies in empowering them with a choice. I recognize how vital this choice is as it was an option I was never afforded.
The idea that the community could provide every kid with an opportunity to follow their dreams in pursuit of excellence is exciting! Providing this opportunity to young people will only enrich and strengthen our community.
For those that have questions about the charter school, I encourage you to come to a public meeting and get an understanding for what is being proposed. Give kids in Girdwood a choice; the time is now!
