Cooper Landing Elementary School students learn first hand the strength it takes to put water on a fire thanks to firefighters Mike Smith, Ken Green, Steve Lipscomb, and Keith Doroff.

Four Cooper Landing volunteer fire fighters visited the school Sept. 21 and Assistant Fire Chief Mike Smith enjoyed the memory of the experience as he told me about it. Keith Doroff, Ken Green, and Steve Lipscomb were with Mike when they brought two siren blaring fire trucks into the school yard after a school fire drill. A donation from Ireland Clinic of Chiropractic LLC in Anchorage paid for four kid-size turnout suits, while other kids wore some of the smaller firefighters gear. The big thing was handling the hose and feeling the water pressure as they experienced a hands-on fire fighting demonstration.
The fire crew worked with the kids teaching them about fire safety as they let them “drive” a fire truck. National Fire Safety Week is Oct. 7-13 and everyone was reminded to check their home smoke detectors, be aware of potential fire hazards, and other fire safety advice. The children went home with fire hats, color books and crayons. Mike said the kids turn-out suits will remain at the fire house for future interactions with the school.

The Sexy Senior Dumpster Cleaners, every environmentally active, had a pleasant surprise recently when cleaning the pullout at Tern Lake. Rep. Paul Seaton, on his way to Seward for meetings, pulled over to lend a hand when he saw the SSDC crew working.
