Winter has finally arrived in Alaska! Along with the snow, the First Saturday shows are in full swing at the Girdwood Center for Visual Arts. Our January show will feature oil painter Gina Edwards. The show titled “Feather, Four legged and Other Acts of Nature” will present oil paintings of animals, aquatic life, landscapes and florals. You’ll enjoy “The Doghouse” portion of the show featuring many different breeds of dogs. Edwards’ says, “I initially just wanted to stick with birds and mammals for this show but when you look at the scope of nature it’s hard to know what to exclude. You rarely consider an animal without thinking about the environment they dwell in. Those habitat images create a whole other set of artistic directions.”
The show is playful and majestic all at once. There is sure to be a painting to suit everybody’s taste. The Visual Arts Center is located at Olympic Mountain Loop (next to the Bake Shop) and is open Wed.-Sun., 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Join us for the artist reception 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 5. Appetizers are provided by Chair 5, and wine is sponsored by Jack Sprats. Kick off the New Year by enjoying the slopes, a quiet walk or a quiet cozy dinner in Girdwood, but be sure to include an art break at the Girdwood Visual Arts Center.
