“A Vision of Scrooge” written and directed by Phil Weber who also played the part of Scrooge was performed Dec. 20 at Cooper Landing School. Riley Christensen, Shelbe Holben, Kyle Milne, Wyatt Bartlett, Jimmy Milne, Alejandra Smith, James Holben, Isabel Daniell, and Kelemen Smith completed the cast. The plot revolved around the making and selling of Christmas swags which the kids do in real life every year to make money for extracurricular activities.
The cast and audience sang Christmas songs after the play as the finishing touches were put on the potluck dinner. Hams baked at school were donated by residents of Eagles View senior housing.
Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus made themselves comfortable by the Christmas tree while kids lined up for lap time and photo opportunities. Santa’s treats included Beanie Babies donated by Shriners. Thanks to Jerry James for his help in getting Santa to the school on time.
Library volunteer Virginia Morgan reports: The Cooper Landing Community Library’s Preschool Reading Program recently received a grant of $1,720.00 from The Fred Meyer Foundation. The Preschool Reading Program will use this award to promote literacy by providing books for all babies, toddlers, and preschool-aged children in Cooper Landing and for children in neighboring communities who regularly attend the library’s Preschool Reading Program. The library will purchase books to give to the children once a month for one year.
The Fred Meyer Foundation was excited to participate in this program and granted an additional $1,000 over the amount originally requested in the grant. Money not needed for books will be used to purchase items for the children’s area of the library.
Linda Schirmers and Mary Wilson from the Soldotna Fred Meyer store presented the check to Virginia.
Ludwig “Babe” Osowiecki died in a hospital near his home in Thomaston, CT, after a brief illness. Babe lived in Cooper Landing for 17 years and since his retirement he operated a seasonal campground and built a house on part of the old Towle homestead here.
Babe drove to Alaska from Connecticut in 1970 for a vacation. He met Jan Loewecke and they were married in 1972. Babe worked for the Forest Service and later was construction administrator for the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District. He was a Kenai Lake Baptist Church deacon, an EMT with the ambulance squad, and president of the Cooper Landing Community Club.
Babe lost the use of his right arm from an accident when he was a kid, but he could do anything, it seemed to me. I watched him put up paneling in the post office in the 1970’s and marveled at how easy he made it look. He was a tall, big, man and used his legs skillfully. Babe was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed taking part in the annual One Arm Dove Hunt in Olney, TX. Babe was 61.
Jan and family which includes Brian, Elizabeth, Kris, and Kati Loewecke; Jeff and Betsy Osowiecki; Jonathon Osowiecki; and Beth Osowiecki and her son Samuel, will hold a memorial service in June at Kenai Lake Baptist Church (KLBC).
Donations in remembrance of Babe can be made to KLBC at Box 662, Cooper Landing, AK 99572 or to Litchfield Hills Bible Church at Box 1116, Winchester, CT 06098.
